Does ash need seasoning?

Ash has a reputation for burning even when it's not fully dried — but "burns" and "burns well" aren't the same thing. For a clean, hot, efficient fire you still want it at 20% moisture or less. Getting the best from ash

1. Use it as your main wood. Ash is happy doing the heavy lifting, from lighting through to a long burn.
2. Give it air to start. Keep the vents open until it's well alight, then ease them back to control the burn.
3. Mix in oak for the long haul. If you want an even longer evening burn, add a denser wood once the fire's established.
