Wood pellets that burn clean, burn hot, and don't clog your stove
Wood pellets are one of the most efficient ways to heat your home. They are made from compressed, dried sawdust with no glue, no fillers, just clean wood pressed into uniform 6mm pellets. The result is fuel with consistent moisture, density and ash content, which is exactly what pellet stoves and biomass boilers are designed for.
Every batch we sell is ENplus A1 certified, the highest grade of wood pellet you can buy in the UK. That means low ash, low fines, and reliable performance every time you fire up. No half-burnt pellets, no clogged augers, no surprises.
Why ENplus A1 matters when you buy wood pellets
Not all wood pellets are the same, and the difference shows up fast when you start burning them. ENplus A1 is the European standard for premium-grade pellets, with strict limits on:
- Moisture content (under 10%), so pellets ignite easily and burn hot
- Ash content (under 0.7%), so you empty the ash pan less often
- Fines (the dust at the bottom of the bag, kept under 1%)
- Mechanical durability, meaning pellets stay intact during handling and transport
Lower-grade pellets cause more problems than they solve. Excessive ash blocks burn pots. Too many fines clog augers and feed mechanisms. High moisture cuts heat output. ENplus A1 sidesteps all of that, which is why we only stock pellets that meet this standard.
If you have a high-end stove or a biomass boiler under the BSL (Biomass Suppliers List) scheme, ENplus A1 pellets are usually a requirement for warranty and grant compliance.
Hardwood or softwood pellets?
Pellets are made from either hardwood, softwood, or a blend of the two. Each has its place:
- Hardwood pellets (oak, beech, ash) are denser, burn longer per kilo and produce more heat. Slightly more ash, but the higher heat output usually makes up for it.
- Softwood pellets (pine, spruce) are lower in ash, light easily and burn hot. Often preferred for smaller pellet stoves.
- Blended pellets combine the two for a balance of heat output and clean burning.
Most stove manufacturers don't mind which you use, as long as it's ENplus A1. If you're not sure, hardwood pellets are the safer bet for steady winter heating.
How much do you need?
Pellet usage varies a lot depending on your appliance and how warm you keep your home, but here's a rough guide:
- Pellet stove (single room): Around 1–2 tonnes per winter
- Pellet stove with back boiler: 3–5 tonnes per winter
- Domestic biomass boiler: 4–8 tonnes per winter
- Light/occasional use: A few 15kg bags per month
We sell wood pellets in single 15kg bags, multi-bag bundles, half pallets and full pallets. If you go through more than a few bags a month, a pallet works out cheaper per kilo and saves you reordering constantly. For biomass boilers, a full pallet or bulk delivery is usually the only sensible option.
Pellets for stoves vs pellets for biomass boilers
For a domestic pellet stove, you can get away with any ENplus A1 pellet. They are forgiving, you can buy by the bag, and you are not running the system around the clock.
For a biomass boiler, things are stricter. Boilers tend to be more sensitive to ash content and fines because they run for longer periods and the auger handles much more fuel. Boiler manufacturers usually specify ENplus A1, and many require BSL-approved pellets if you are on the Renewable Heat Incentive scheme. Storing your wood pellets properly
Pellets are easy to store: they do not attract insects, do not rot, and stack tighter than firewood. However, they are sensitive to moisture. Even a small amount of damp will cause pellets to swell, fall apart and turn back into sawdust, and once that happens they cannot be used.
Keep your pellets in their sealed bags until you are ready to use them, and store them somewhere dry. A garage, shed or utility room is ideal. If you are keeping a full pallet outside, leave the shrink wrap on and add a tarp over the top, but make sure the sides can still breathe. Do not store pellets directly on a concrete floor without a pallet underneath.
