Kiln dried logs buying guide
All our logs are kiln dried to below 20% moisture and Ready to Burn certified, so every species here lights easily and burns clean. The choice is really about how you burn: a quick, lively fire in a smaller stove, or long, steady heat that lasts the evening. Below we first compare light and dense hardwood, then put every species side by side.
Take the test and find your perfect logs
Answer a few quick questions and we will show you the species that matches your stove and the way you like to burn.
Step 1: light or dense hardwood?
The main question is how big and powerful your stove is. Light hardwood is ideal for getting a good fire going quickly in smaller stoves. Dense hardwood gives long, high heat in medium and larger stoves.
Light hardwood (alder & birch)
- Lights very easily and gets going fast
- Bright, lively flame for a cosy fire
- Ideal for small stoves and open fires (1 to 5 kW)
- Perfect for a quick fire on a milder evening
Dense hardwood (ash, beech, hornbeam & oak)
- Burns slowly and stays in for hours
- Gives off high, steady heat
- Ideal for medium to large stoves (5 kW and over)
- Less topping up during the evening
Step 2: compare the species
The calorific value of our species sits close together (roughly 4.1 to 4.3 kWh per kilo). The real difference is how fast or slowly the wood burns and which stove it suits. Here is everything at a glance.
| Species | Type | How it burns | Suitable for | Burn time | Calorific value | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alder logs Split · 25 cm Quick & lively | Light | Lights very easily and burns fast with a lively flame | Small stoves and open fires (1 to 5 kW) | 1 to 1.5 hrs | 4.1 kWh/kg | Shop → |
| Birch logs Split · 25 cm Quick & lively | Light | Lights very easily, bright flame and little soot | Small to medium stoves (1 to 10 kW) | 1 to 2 hrs | 4.3 kWh/kg | Shop → |
| Ash logs Split · 25 cm Dense hardwood All-rounder | Dense | Lights easily for a dense hardwood and gives high, steady heat | Most stoves from medium upwards (5 kW and over) | 1.5 to 2.5 hrs | 4.1 kWh/kg | Shop → |
| Beech logs Split · 25 and 33 cm Dense hardwood | Dense | Clean, even burn with a warm flame and little smoke, also great on the barbecue | Medium to large stoves (5 kW and over) | 2 to 2.5 hrs | 4.1 kWh/kg | Shop → |
| Hornbeam logs 25 cm · the densest wood we sell Dense hardwood Longest burn | Dense | Slower to get going, then burns very long and very hot | Large stoves (10 kW and over) | 2.5 to 3 hrs | 4.1 kWh/kg | Shop → |
| Oak logs Split · 25 and 33 cm Dense hardwood | Dense | Slower start, then long and very hot, crackles and gives a little more smoke | Medium to large stoves (10 kW and over) | 2 to 3 hrs | 4.3 kWh/kg | Shop → |
| Pizza oven wood Oak, ash and beech · short splits Pizza oven | Dense | Gets up to temperature fast and burns clean, split short so it fits a compact oven | Ooni, Gozney and traditional wood-fired ovens | Quick, hot burn | 4.1 to 4.3 kWh/kg | Shop → |
Calorific values and burn times are approximate, per kilo and per log. All our logs are kiln dried to below 20% moisture and Ready to Burn certified. Standard log length is 25 cm, with oak and beech also available in 33 cm.
Our advice in short
Small stove or open fire (1 to 5 kW)?
Go for light hardwood like alder or birch. Easy to light and a lovely flame, without overloading a smaller stove.
Medium stove (5 to 10 kW)?
Ash is the versatile favourite: it lights easily, burns hot and lasts a good while with very little smoke.
Large stove (10 kW and over)?
Choose oak or beech and hornbeam. Dense hardwoods that burn long and hot, so you top up far less often.
Pizza oven or fire pit?
Our pizza oven wood is split short from oak, ash and beech, so it fits ovens like the Ooni and Gozney and gets up to temperature fast.
