The Swiss Method: How to Light a Top-Down Fire
We are not only here to provide you with the finest quality firewood, but we also want to share the best tips, interesting facts, and the most up-to-date do's and don'ts. Are you familiar with the latest fire-lighting technique? The so-called 'Swiss Method' is all about creating a fire that releases as few harmful substances as possible — both for people and for the environment. Of course, a well-built and beautifully burning fire is also a crucial part of this technique. In this article, we tell you everything about the Swiss Method.
What is the Swiss Method?
The Swiss Method is an energy-efficient way of burning, but also an approach that delivers a cleaner combustion with less smoke and faster ignition. What's more, it gives you a stunning display of flames that is easy to maintain. The key is that with this method you need to let go of all the conventional rules and traditions — a Swiss fire is built 'upside down'. You light the fire from the top rather than from the bottom. The fire also feeds itself, meaning it keeps burning for a long time without you needing to add new logs every few minutes.
Ready? Let's get burning! Follow the step-by-step guide below to create a beautiful log fire.

What you will need:
- Split logs approximately 25 to 30 cm long and around 7 cm thick (use a fist-width as a rough guide)
- Slightly smaller logs to place on top of the above
- At least three pieces of kindling
- A chemical-free firelighter, such as Giant Flames wood wool firelighters or firelighter blocks
- A lighter or matches
Step 1. Preparation:
Build the fire by first placing the large logs in the fireplace or stove. Lay them parallel to one another. Make sure there is enough space between the logs to allow airflow. Place the split side of the log facing upwards — the bark side should naturally rest on the bottom.
Step 2. Build it up!
Now take the smaller logs. Place these crossways on top of the bottom layer, like building a tower. Place the kindling crossways on top as well, with two or three firelighter blocks tucked in between.
Step 3. Lighting the fire:
Light the firelighters and close the door of the stove if applicable. You are starting the fire from the top rather than the bottom. This way, the heat warms the firebox thoroughly and burns off the gases and smoke released from the logs beneath. This is the most efficient method for getting a fire going quickly and cleanly. After approximately 20 minutes you will have a fully established, smoke-free fire.

Step 4. While your fire is burning:
Only add a new log once the other logs have fully burned down and a bed of ash has formed. Adding a single layer of logs at a time is sufficient. When you are done with the fire, simply let it burn out on its own. You can use a little sand to speed things up if needed.
Tip! Watch the video in which Chef Erik demonstrates exactly how to apply the method. He uses a pizza oven, but of course this works just as well in any log burner, wood burner, or open fireplace.
